Review:

Characters: 10/10 (men:15/10, women 5/10)

Music score + OP&ED: 10/10 totally cool and dope

Plot: 10/10 stays interesting and surprises me very often

Friendship and Comradeship: 20/10 they are all so cute and pure, I love them

Visual Storytelling: 20/10 it's over the top. Most shows don't bother showing you more than one wide shot angle of a place, while this drama really creates space and dimensions with different angles and perspectives, you really feel the "the world is vast"

Romance: -10/10 (it's so boring and bad, I cannot stand it, and is so obviously men writing women)

Overall score: 60/60, the bad romance gets overshadowed by everything else so I'm good.

Overall very enjoyable drama to watch, since it's Wuxia, I totally can look past the bad romance plotlines, so it has much more interesting things to get involved into. I love all the male characters as they are written and played with depth. The women not so much, they all fall into the "fragile, beautiful, mystique" category and are just "women" without showing real character. What I do give the show is that they have a basically trans character, but in a twisted way. There's one man, that identifies as male, but due to his cultivation got his body turned into a women, so in the end he's in the wrong body, but carries and plays as a man, even though he's played by a woman. And his character is pretty likeable too.

Favourite characters:

Lei Mengsha (he's just a fluff ball, he's blunt, a blabbermouth, has a great laugh (that make me crack up each time), and a big heart)

Wen Hujiu (uncle of the protagonist, is a melon seed eater and poisoner, with the bold dress saying "I poison you to death")

Baili Dongjun, Ye Yun and Sikong Changfeng (three main protagonists and I love them so much, even though Ye Yun went down a different path, it doesn't seem to shake his bond with Dongjun which is 👌🏻, Sikong Changfeng is Dongjun's sidekick since episode one, which is great)

Li Changsheng (I love the old geezer version more than the younger self, he's just much more funny, if he looks old and talks like a youngster, than the other way around)

Xiao Ruofeng (first of all I love his accent and voice, he has his heart at the right place, but stands between himself and the power struggle of the court (he's a prince))

Liu Yue (he's great and he has sass, I only wished you could see his face more, because I kinda want to see his expressions and Co)

Yu Sheng Mo (trans character mentioned above)

I do love Baili Changfeng (he's fun with his son), Gu Chen and the "pretentious lord of the eight lords" Luo Xuan

The problem with the women:

I can't really pinpoint it, but the three main women feel like a man's dream rather than human beings, like this is how women should be: "graceful, mindful and mysterious", the love scenes are just stretched silences of a staring contest and like nothing is achieved in these scenes. I do like the confession from Dongjun though, because he notices that he loves his companion rather than the picture of a fairy, which is good. The rest of their relationship is weird. They don't have chemistry (I don't count staring at eachother for a minute as chemistry, sorry) and whenever Dongjun is on screen with one of his friends or brothers in arms, he is much more relaxed, himself and you can feel their bond throughout every word and action. Then it comes to speaking to Yueyao and the dialogue is just not more than information or a script.

The worst is Wenjun, she is the worst. But she's cute, I'll give her that.

Nangong Chunshui and his wife have something I'd call romance and chemistry.

I'm at episode 25 for now, so please don't spoil me anything that happens past. Thank you. I didn't plan on releasing it now, but I got all I wanted to say like I wanted to say it, so scrap it.

Blood of Youth recap - episode 20

General Ye says he’s come for his daughter. Xiao Ruoyi tells him Xiao Chuhe is wounded and the information she sent was leaked.

Lei Yunhe tells Lei Wujie General Ye could take Xiao Se.

Wuxin is keeping everyone out of Xiao Se’s sickroom. Xie Xuan tells him they need to suppress Xiao Se’s zhenqi to save him, but Hua Jin arrives just in time.

Outside, Lei Wujie and Qianluo meet the man who brought Hua Jin there. General Ye and Ye Ruoyi recognise him as the Golden Marquis Lanyue.

Marquis Lanyue says General Ye doesn’t need a whole battalion just to get his daughter back and tells Lei Wujie and Qianluo that Xiao Se is Lord Yong’an.

Qianluo goes to see Tang Lian, who’s avoiding everyone because he feels guilty. She tells him Xiao Se is Lord Yong’an.

Lei Wujie tells Wuxin the news. General Ye and the marquis say they want to see Xiao Se. Lei Wujie blocks them and introduces himself as the Azure Dragon. General Ye says he’ll protect Lei Mengsha’s son but he has to take Xiao Se. The marquis asks if General Ye is defying the emperor’s decree.

Tang Lian comes out and introduces himself as the Black Tortoise. Qianluo introduces herself as the Vermilion Bird.

The marquis says he has to take Xiao Se. Hua Jin comes out and says he’ll die on the road. His condition has stabilised but she can’t cure him. Xie Xuan says he needs to go to Penglai island. The marquis says the island’s a myth and he needs to go to Tianqi. Xie Xuan says Baili Dongjun has been there and restored his lost powers before he fought Ye Dingzhi.

Xiao Se staggers out and says he’ll go to Penglai island. Xiao Se asks Marquis Lanyue and General Ye to go back to Tianqi and says he’ll return to Xueyue in a year.

Ye Ruoyi leaves with General Ye.

Wuxin says he’s leaving and tells Lei Wujie to protect Xiao Se.

Lord Bai tells Jingxia Dark River’s involvement has upset his plans.

Lord Chi is told Ye Anshi saved Xiao Chuhe.

Xiao Se convinces Qianluo to go back to Xueyue to report to Sikong Changfeng and meet them at the sea.

Xiao Se tells Tang Lian he lied to Qianluo. He says he didn’t kill the Old Master, he thinks Su Changhe backstabbed him.

Wuxin goes back to Hanshui Temple with Minghou and meets Wuchan. Wuchan says he’ll help Minghou. Wuxin says he’s looking for Li Hanyi.

Marquis Lanyue visits the State Preceptor and asks about Penglai island near Sanshe (three snakes) island and the deity who lives there. The State Preceptor says he told Baili Dongjun not to go back there. The emperor summons them and Marquis Lanyue says he wanted to bring Xiao Chuhe back but Lei Mengsha’s son and Tang Lian prevented him. Also, Xiao Se didn’t want to return yet because he’s injured. The emperor asks if the State Preceptor can cure Xiao Se and he says he can keep him alive. The chief eunuch says Jinwei can bring Xiao Se back.

In Dongji, Lei Wujie gets lost and meets a woman called Zhenzhu. She points out Xuesong ship to him.

Xiao Se says Xuesong ship belongs to the Mu family, the richest in the nine cities of Qingzhou.

is it just me, or the writers of dashing youth really be writing yi wenjun as ye dingzhi’s obsession and xiao baili as his love interest?

I mean, he literally keeps on sneaking around just to watch dongjun from afar while constantly protecting him. After getting all that power, he also decided to deprive dongjun of all his power just so he wouldn’t be involved and thus stay safe, away from all the dramas. He also wanted dongjun to hate him so he would not try to protect him anymore cause it might put him in danger. Hell if this is xianxia he would’ve died at least once for dongjun.

On the other hand, when it comes to wenjun, it really feels more like an obsession. He acted like wenjun is the one last thing that’s supposed to be his, so he didn’t want the royal family to take her too. Instead of setting her free, he practically just took her out of a golden cage and then put her in a wooden cage. He never even care about her feelings, especially regarding her other son. Before the final fight, he actually made time to go and watch dongjun longingly from afar, while he wouldn’t even go to see wenjun (let’s be real, at this point no one can stop him if he wanted to go). He never even asked if he should kidnap the other kid for wenjun and took them away with him. All he cared about by the end was to destroy the royal family and beili. Wenjun was just an excuse at this point. If the excuse was that he already went to the deep end and became demonized, then it made no sense cause up to the very end he still cared about dongjun and still looks at him with so much longing.

When it comes to dongjun, he’s willing to be selfless, but when it comes to wenjun, he’s always selfish.

So again, why? this is so weird like, is it supposed to be like this in the novel?

Even dongjun himself, tbh, the way he interacted with yue yao felt so shallow. Like they’re very good friends who love each other but not in love. Is it the lack of chemistry between the actors? or is it the script that are kinda weird? not sure

I just feel like something was lacking in regard to the main romance storylines
